Typical Multi-Day Tour Itinerary
Bale Mountains Trekking Tours Ethiopia
Day 1: Addis Ababa → Rift Valley Lakes (Ziway / Langano / Hawassa)
Your adventure begins as you depart Addis Ababa and head south through the breathtaking landscapes of the Great Rift Valley. This iconic geological formation stretches across East Africa and offers dramatic scenery, including ancient volcanic formations, highland escarpments, and wide savannah plains dotted with acacia trees.
Along the way, you will pass several of Ethiopia’s most beautiful Rift Valley lakes. Depending on your schedule, you may stop at:
Lake Ziway – famous for its islands, monasteries, and abundant birdlife
Lake Langano – known for its relaxing shores and swimming-friendly waters
Lake Hawassa – a lively lakeside city offering boat rides, markets, and lakeshore cafés
These stops offer excellent opportunities for photography, birdwatching, or simple relaxation. Expect sightings of pelicans, cormorants, storks, kingfishers, and other vibrant water birds.
By afternoon, continue your scenic drive through the lush farmlands, small villages, and highland foothills leading toward the south.
Day 2: Rift Valley → Dinsho (Bale Mountains National Park Headquarters)
Begin your morning in Hawassa, often with an optional boat trip on Lake Hawassa where you may see hippos, African fish eagles, and colorful wetland birds. The lakeside fish market is also a unique cultural stop where Fishermen prepare the day’s catch while marabou storks stand waiting nearby.
From Hawassa, continue your drive toward Dinsho, the home of the Bale Mountains National Park headquarters. As you gain elevation, the temperature cools and the scenery transitions into rolling highlands and fertile fields.
On arrival in Dinsho, enjoy an afternoon wildlife walk accompanied by your local guide. This area is one of the best places to see Bale’s iconic endemic mammals:
Mountain Nyala
Menelik’s Bushbuck
Warthogs grazing in the open fields
Abyssinian Oribi
Bird lovers may encounter species such as the Abyssinian Ground Thrush, Capuchin Babbler, and various raptors circling the grassy hills. The calm forest atmosphere offers a perfect introduction to the Bale ecosystem.
Day 3: Web Valley & Gaysay Grasslands
Spend the day exploring two of Bale’s most spectacular ecological zones.
Web Valley
This fertile valley is shaped by streams and rolling hills, creating ideal habitats for several wildlife species. Morning and evening offer the best chances to see the critically endangered Ethiopian Wolf, Africa’s rarest carnivore and the world’s most threatened canid.
Gaysay Grasslands
Wide open plains stretch across the highlands surrounded by rugged ridges. This area is home to:
Large herds of antelopes
Warthogs
Hares
Many endemic bird species including the Wattled Ibis, Rouget’s Rail, and Blue-winged Goose
The combination of wildlife sightings and panoramic views makes Day 3 a highlight for nature enthusiasts, photographers, and researchers alike.
Day 4: Sanetti Plateau → Harenna Forest
Ascend to the breathtaking Sanetti Plateau, one of Africa’s highest all-weather roads, often rising above 4,000 meters. The plateau is covered with unique Afro-alpine vegetation such as giant lobelia, everlasting flowers, and moss-covered rocks.
This area is the best place in the world to observe the Ethiopian Wolf hunting for giant mole rats and other rodents. The crisp air, sweeping plains, and distant peaks create an otherworldly atmosphere.
After exploring Sanetti, descend into the vast and mysterious Harenna Forest, one of Ethiopia’s last remaining natural forests. This region offers:
Dense bamboo thickets
Moss-draped trees
Wild coffee plants
Cloud forest habitats
Keep an eye out for the Bale Monkey, a rare primate found only in this region, as well as giant forest hogs, colobus monkeys, and diverse bird species. You may enjoy a peaceful forest walk surrounded by cool mist and rich biodiversity.
Day 5–6: Deep Harenna Forest & Southern Cultural Exploration
These days allow for deeper exploration based on your interests. Choose one or more experiences:
• Wild Coffee & Honey Forests — Manyete Area
Visit Oromo families who sustainably harvest wild forest coffee that grows naturally in the Harenna Forest. Learn about traditional beekeeping, honey production, local farming methods, and cultural practices deeply connected to the forest.
• Sof Omar Caves
If conditions permit, visit the legendary Sof Omar Caves, one of Africa’s largest and most impressive underground limestone cave systems. The Web River flows through the cave, creating tunnels, chambers, and passages decorated with natural rock formations. This site holds spiritual significance and attracts both nature explorers and cultural travelers.
• Southern Drylands Exploration (Genale Valley or Yabelo)
Travel farther south into Ethiopia’s dryland regions where the landscape transitions into open savannah and rocky plateaus. Highlights include:
Rare dryland bird species
Traditional pastoralist culture
Panoramic desert-like scenery
Small villages offering authentic cultural interactions
This area provides a strong contrast to the cool highlands of Bale, giving travelers a broader view of Ethiopia’s ecological and cultural diversity.
Day 7: Return to Addis Ababa via Wendo Genet
Begin your return journey north through the Rift Valley.
Along the way, stop at Wendo Genet, a lush forested area renowned for its natural hot springs. Enjoy a relaxing soak, a forest walk, or a peaceful picnic surrounded by birds and eucalyptus trees.
Afterward, continue the drive to Addis Ababa, arriving in the late afternoon or evening, where your unforgettable Bale Mountains and southern Ethiopia adventure concludes.
